"Conducting Business in the Field"

I hunt with the same group of guys everyday and we take our approaches very seriously regarding the manner by which we "conduct business" in the field. There is always one "pit boss," which eliminates second guesses concerning who exactly will call the shots during the hunt. This person will unquestionably lead the way in calling, meaning that he watches every movement made by the birds as they approach or circle the decoy spread. Consequently, only one person is continually looking at the birds rather than four or five pairs of eyes. Through actual experience in hunting with the same core of individuals, I can close my eyes and literally describe where the birds are and what they're doing by just listening to the calling sequence of our crew. The more experience you gain in hunting with the same crew day in and day out will dramatically increase your success ratio.

Another Season For Diesel Ducks

At this writing, Arkansas is one week away from the opening day of waterfowl season and conditions are extreme. At the same time last year, we had already experienced two major floods and every river, oxbow lake, ditch and slough were full of water. As the sun came up this morning, the temperature was 54 degrees … which would be closer to our normal high temperature this time of year. Today's high is supposed to be around 80 degrees! It's been so warm and dry the regional newscast recently announced several counties in this area had qualified for federal aid due to extreme drought conditions. That's certainly not what most people consider to be good duck weather. The warm weather has created several problems that will have an impact on duck season....more...

A New Beginning

Davy Crockett Guide Service- www.arkansaswaterfowl.com

Have you ever asked yourself; am I an optimist or a pessimist? Is your glass half full or half empty? Has waterfowl season just ended or is it just beginning? Whatever the question may be, your answer will depend on your general perspective of life.

Waterfowl season is much the same way. For example, unless you are one of the folks that give chase to snow geese during the spring season, you're probably in the process of storing your decoys and cleaning up the gear you used this past winter. On the other hand, if you're like me you throw all your decoys in a pile, only to worry about them later. Its not like this is the first time I've done this, or for that matter written about it. The thing is, every fall when I open the shed, I'm always shocked to see the elves have not made a visit to my decoy shed.

What elves you might ask … the same ones I've written about in the past. You must remember them. They're from the same family of elves...more...
